Pontiac's numbering systems — sales codes vs corporate RPO/UPC

Pontiac used three overlapping code systems in this era. Sources mix them freely, so every table in this tree states which kind a code is.

  1. Pontiac 3-digit sales codes (≈1960–1968). Dealer order forms, invoices, and billing history cards used division-specific numeric codes — e.g. 1964 sales code 382 = GTO option on Tempest/LeMans; 1968 Firebird 347 = Ram Air, 582 = air conditioning, 731/734/738 = axle options. Numbering was division-wide but the meaning of some numbers shifted between model years.
  2. Fisher Body "five-group" accessory codes (1964–1967). Some Fisher plants (Framingham, Kansas City, Pontiac) stamped grouped accessory codes (a digit + letters, e.g. 3F = 400 engine on a 1967 Firebird tag) along the bottom of the cowl/trim tag. These are body-plant codes, not order codes.
  3. GM corporate UPC/RPO alphanumeric codes (from ~1969). Pontiac order documentation moved to the corporate 3-character Uniform Parts Code / Regular Production Option format (L74, WT1, WS4, D55, G80…). Numeric sales codes persisted in parallel on invoices and billing cards into the 1970s — e.g. the Super Duty 455 was UPC LS2 with sales code 35X.

Beware code reuse. The same UPC meant different things in different years: WS6 was the 1969 Firebird Power Assist Group but the 1978–1981 Trans Am Special Performance Package; Y88 was the 1969 Firebird Basic Group but the 1978 Gold Special Edition; W66 was the 1969 Firebird 400 engine option but the 1977–1980 Astre/Sunbird Formula package (and a Firebird Formula model code). Always match code

  • year + model.

PHS documentation. Pontiac Historic Services (PHS, https://www.phs-online.com/) sells copies of the original factory billing history for individual VINs — the authoritative way to confirm what any specific Pontiac was built with. Codes here are for reference, not authentication.
