Numbering-scheme note — Oldsmobile's own codes vs. corporate RPO

Oldsmobile did not use the familiar three-character corporate RPO alphanumerics for most of the early 1960s. Three phases matter when reading Olds paperwork:

  1. Early/mid-1960s — divisional option numbers. Options were ordered by Oldsmobile's own numbers and names on the dealer order form. The most famous example is the original 4-4-2, ordered in 1964 as option B-09 "Police Apprehender Pursuit". For 1965 the 4-4-2 was literally ordered as "4-4-2" on the order form (no letter code is documented in the 1965 Chassis Service Manual, which contains no option list at all). Codes of this era use a letter-dash-two-digit style (B-09, W-29, L-69) that Oldsmobile continued to print with dashes long after the corporate scheme dropped them.
  2. 1966 onward — corporate-style RPO codes. From the 1966 Chassis Service Manual, Oldsmobile documents options with GM-style codes (W-29, W-30, L-78, M-40, G-80 …). These are functionally the same codes as GM corporate RPOs; Olds literature writes them with a dash (W-30) while body tags / build sheets show them without (W30). Both spellings appear in this reference and refer to the same code.
  3. W-codes. Oldsmobile reserved the W prefix mostly for performance options — the "W-machines" (W-25, W-27, W-29, W-30, W-31, W-32, W-33, W-34, W-45/W-46, later W-40/W-41/W-42). These are genuine corporate-style codes, comparable to Chevrolet's Z-codes.

Caveats from the source Chassis Service Manuals: the 1965 and 1973 CSMs contain no option lists, so several 1965/1973 codes here are inferred from adjacent years or from dealer literature; no compiled list is all-inclusive.

Master code table (division-wide highlights)

Full per-year detail lives in the model documents. This table collects the codes most often needed to decode an Oldsmobile of 1960–1982. Confidence: confirmed = 2+ independent sources; single-source; disputed.
