Buick's two numbering systems (important)

Sources for classic Buicks show two distinct code systems, and they are frequently confused:

  1. Buick dealer ordering / accessory codes — short letter+digit codes (A1, A9, B4, H6, I-6, …) printed on Buick's own dealer order forms and option sheets through roughly 1972. These are Buick-internal, are reused with different meanings on different car lines in the same year (e.g. in 1970, A9 = Riviera GS option on the full-size sheet, while A9 = GSX package on the intermediate/GS line, and A1 = Stage 1 on the GS 455), and also change meaning year-to-year.
  2. GM corporate RPO codes — three-character codes (G80, M21, LC8, WE2, …) used on build sheets / production broadcast copies, and used exclusively on window stickers and order forms from the mid-1970s onward. These are consistent corporate-wide within a year.

A decoded vehicle's trunk-lid service label or build sheet shows RPO codes; period Buick sales literature and many enthusiast writeups quote the dealer ordering codes. Both are tabulated in the model docs, with the system noted where sources distinguish them.

Coverage gaps

  • 1960–1964 full-size and Special/Skylark ordering codes: no reliable online code tables located; only narrative sources. Codes for these years are largely undocumented here.
  • 1965–1969 year-by-year dealer code sheets: only the 1970 sheets (intermediate + full-size) are transcribed online at TeamBuick; 1965–69 and 1971–72 sheets were not found in machine-readable form.
  • 1975–1982 Skylark (X-body) and 1979–82 Riviera (E-body): only partial RPO coverage.
  • GM Heritage Center order-guide PDFs for these years were not directly retrievable during compilation and would upgrade many single-source entries.
