Pontiac Trans Sport — first generation, U-body / GMT199 (1990–1996)

Wikipedia describes the first Trans Sport as Pontiac's front-drive minivan on the GMT199 (U) platform, built at North Tarrytown, New York, for 1990–1996: base and SE models at launch, a GT for 1992 only, and the SE alone for 1993–1996. Its engines were the 3.1L V6 (LG6) with a 3 speed automatic for 1990–1995, the 3800 3.8L V6 (L27) with a 4 speed automatic from 1992 to 1995, and the 3.4L V6 (LA1) alone for 1996. The NICB VIN manuals of these years list only a "Pontiac Multi Purpose Vehicle" line, with no model name, trims or engines. No Pontiac order guide, RPO list or Heritage kit for this van is in the archive, so the codes come from Wikipedia and from the Chevrolet Lumina APV kits (their powertrain, power teams and optional-equipment weight pages), cited only for engine, transmission and chassis codes the Trans Sport shares with its U-body twin. Wikipedia names the engines by code but the transmissions only by type, so the transmission codes, which only the kits print, are single-source. Every option, package, paint and trim code is a gap in the sources, not a finding that it was not offered.

Codes

Engines

Code Description Years Models/Notes Confidence
LG6 Engine, 3.1L V6, electronic fuel injection 1990–1995 with the 3 speed automatic; Wikipedia's Trans Sport infobox gives LG6 for the generation, its first-generation section gives the 3.1L V6 from launch until it was replaced for 1996, and its 60° V6 article lists the Trans Sport 1990–1995 under LG6; 1990 from the dealer specifications powertrains page (ordering code LG6; model year 1990, dated September 1989); 1992, 1994 and 1995 from the power teams pages' engine code line; the 1993 power teams page prints LGG, so 1993 is cited from the single-condition remarks on the 1993 optional-equipment weight page ("W/3.1L Engine, LG6") on the engine block heater lines; 1991 from the MVMA engine page (p.25) and electrical page (p.37), which print model year 1991 (issued 6-90) and the engine code line "Electronic Fuel Injection RPO LG6" for the 3.1 liter V6; the 1991 MVMA axle page (p.31) prints its model-year field as 1901 and the 1991 dealer powertrains page (p.5) prints its heading as 1951, so neither is cited; shared U-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Lumina APV kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1990 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.6 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1991 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.25, p.37 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1992 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.6 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1993 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.40 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1994 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.4 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1995 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.7 confirmed
L27 Engine, 3800 3.8L V6, multiport fuel injection 1992–1995 requires M13; 1992: standard on the GT (Wikipedia); Wikipedia's Trans Sport infobox gives L27 for the generation, its first-generation section introduces the 3800 for 1992 and replaces it for 1996, and its Buick V6 article lists the Trans Sport 1992–1995 under L27; the power teams pages print L27 on the engine code line, paired with the M13 4 speed automatic; the 1992, 1994 and 1995 optional-equipment weight pages also print the engine's own line (the 1993 one prints it as 127); shared U-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Lumina APV kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1992 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.6, p.42 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1993 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.4 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1994 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.4, p.40 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1995 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.7, p.79 confirmed
LA1 Engine, 3.4L V6, sequential fuel injection 1996 the only 1996 engine, with the M13 4 speed automatic: Wikipedia's Trans Sport infobox gives LA1 for the generation, its first-generation section says the 3.4L V6 replaced both earlier engines for 1996, and its 60° V6 article lists the Trans Sport 1996–1998 under LA1 (1997–1998 belong to the second generation); the 1996 power teams page prints LA1 as its only engine code; shared U-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Lumina APV kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1996 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.4 confirmed

Transmissions

Code Description Years Models/Notes Confidence
MX1 Transmission, 3 speed automatic 1990 with the LG6; the 1990 dealer specifications powertrains page (model year 1990, dated September 1989) names the THM 125 3 speed automatic and prints its RPO code as MXI; matched to the unit by meaning: Wikipedia's Trans Sport article names a 3 speed (3T40) automatic, the sole transmission at launch, but prints no code; 1991 is left out because the 1991 dealer specifications page (p.5), which gives MX1 for the THM 3T40, prints its model-year heading as 1951 (OCR) and only a January 1991 issue date, so its model year is unreadable; the MVMA pages give the 3 speed automatic as MD9 (see MD9); shared U-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Lumina APV kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1990 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.6 single-source
MD9 Transaxle, 3 speed automatic 1992–1995 with the LG6; the MVMA power teams pages print it on the transmission line as "MD9 Auto", 3 speed; 1991 is left out because the only 1991 page printing it, the MVMA axle page (p.31, "Automatic Trans (MD9)"), prints its model-year field as 1901, and its MVMA-91 footer form number does not date a page; matched to the unit by meaning: Wikipedia's Trans Sport article names the 3 speed (3T40) automatic from launch and retires it for 1996, and its THM 125 article puts the THM 125 in the U-body vans 1990–1995 with the LG6, but neither prints a code; the 1990 dealer page gives this transmission as MX1 (see MX1); shared U-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Lumina APV kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1992 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.6 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1993 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.4 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1994 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.4 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1995 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.7 single-source
M13 Transaxle, 4 speed automatic 1992–1996 with the L27 (1992–1995) and the LA1 (1996), as the power teams pages pair them; matched to the unit by meaning: Wikipedia gives the 3800 a 4 speed 4T60 automatic from 1992 and retires the 3 speed for 1996 (its infobox and 4T60-E article name the 4T60-E, the article for the Trans Sport 1992–1998) but prints no code; the 1992–1995 optional-equipment weight pages also print the transmission's own line; shared U-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Lumina APV kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1992 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.6, p.42 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1993 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.4, p.40 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1994 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.4, p.40 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1995 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.7, p.79 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1996 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.4 single-source

Equipment

Code Description Years Models/Notes Confidence
NW9 Traction control 1994 requires L27; the kit marks it interim availability; matched to the item by meaning: Wikipedia says traction control became an option on 3.8L vans for 1994 but prints no code; 1995 is left out because the 1995 kit page lists traction control without a code; shared U-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Lumina APV kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1994 Chevrolet LuminaAPV, p.40 single-source
