Pontiac J2000 / 2000 / 2000 Sunbird / Sunbird — second generation, J-body (1982–1987)
The second-generation Sunbird was Pontiac's front-drive J-body compact for the 1982–1987 model years, sold as the J2000 for 1982, the 2000 for 1983, the 2000 Sunbird (the convertible from 1983, the whole line for 1984) and the Sunbird from 1985, in coupe, hatchback, sedan, wagon and (from 1983) convertible bodies, built at Lordstown, Ohio, and for 1982 also at Leeds, Kansas City (Wikipedia). The NICB VIN manuals list the J2000, J2000 LE and J2000 SE for 1982, the 2000, 2000 LE and 2000 SE for 1983, and, in the 1987 manual's 1984–1987 columns, the Sunbird, Sunbird LE, Sunbird SE and Sunbird convertible. No Pontiac order guide, data book, Heritage kit or service RPO list for this car is in the archive, so only powertrain codes are listed: Wikipedia's Sunbird, 122 engine and Family II engine articles name and date the engine codes, and the Heritage kits of the Chevrolet Cavalier, the J-body twin, are cited only for the transmission codes MM5, MX1 and MD9, which the kits never tie to the Sunbird; they only date a code the two cars share. No source read ties an option, package, paint or trim code to this Sunbird with a year, so none is listed.
Codes
Engines
| Code | Description | Years | Models/Notes | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| L46 | 1.8 L (112 cu in) L4, OHV, 2-barrel carburetor (VIN G) | 1982 | the J2000's launch engine, 88 hp; Wikipedia's Sunbird infobox prints L46, its Engines list and the 122 engine article give it to the J2000 for 1982 only; the VIN letter is from the 1982 NICB Pontiac engine table, which prints no RPO codes | single-source |
| LH8 | 1.8 L L4, SOHC, throttle-body fuel injection (VIN 0) | 1982–1986 | the Brazilian-built overhead-cam four, 84 hp; Wikipedia says it joined the carbureted engine during 1982, at first with the automatic only, and became the standard engine for 1983; Wikipedia's Sunbird Engines list and Family II article give it to the Sunbird 1982–1986; the VIN letter is from the 1987 NICB Pontiac engine table (1983–1986 columns), and the 1983 and 1986 NICB Pontiac engine tables (car_reference/NICB/1983.pdf p.55, 1986.pdf p.76) print the 1.8 L TBI as VIN 0 in their 1982 column; none prints RPO codes | single-source |
| LQ5 | 2.0 L (121 cu in) L4, OHV, throttle-body fuel injection (VIN P) | 1983–1985 | the optional engine, 88 hp (Wikipedia); Wikipedia's Sunbird Engines list and 122 engine article give it to the J2000/2000/Sunbird 1983–1985, and the Sunbird article says the optional 2.0 L four was dropped for 1986; the VIN letter is from the 1987 NICB Pontiac engine table (1983–1985 columns); 1986 is left out although the 1986 and 1987 NICB Pontiac engine tables print a 2.0 L TBI four (VIN P) in their 1986 column, because those tables are division-wide and name no car line or code | single-source |
| LA5 | 1.8 L L4, SOHC, turbocharged, multi-port fuel injection (VIN J) | 1984–1986 | 150 hp; Wikipedia: standard in the SE and optional on the base and LE except the wagon from its introduction, and standard on the GT; Wikipedia's Sunbird Engines list and Family II article give it to the Sunbird 1984–1986; the VIN letter is from the 1987 NICB Pontiac engine table | single-source |
| LT2 | 2.0 L (121 cu in) L4, SOHC, throttle-body fuel injection (VIN K) | 1987 | the base engine, 96 hp; Wikipedia's Sunbird Engines list and Family II article give it to the Sunbird from 1987 (the later years are the third generation's); the VIN letter is from the 1987 NICB Pontiac engine table | single-source |
| LT3 | 2.0 L (121 cu in) L4, SOHC, turbocharged, multi-port fuel injection (VIN M) | 1987 | 165 hp, replacing the 1.8 L turbo (Wikipedia); Wikipedia's Sunbird Engines list and Family II article give it to the Sunbird from 1987 (the later years are the third generation's); the VIN letter is from the 1987 NICB Pontiac engine table | single-source |
Transmissions
| Code | Description | Years | Models/Notes | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MM5 | Transmission, 5 speed manual (merchandised order code) | 1984–1987 | matched to the unit by meaning: Wikipedia's Sunbird article names an optional five-speed manual and a Getrag 282 five-speed in its infobox, but prints no code; 1983 is left out because the brief lists no 1983 Cavalier kit page (Wikipedia makes the five-speed new for 1983); shared J-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Cavalier kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1984 Chevrolet Cavalier, p.11 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1985 Chevrolet Cavalier, p.35 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1986 Chevrolet Cavalier, p.37 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1987 Chevrolet Cavalier, p.37 | single-source |
| MD9 | Automatic transaxle, 3 speed (THM 125C) | 1986–1987 | GM engineering code on the Cavalier power-team pages, the unit the order guides sell as MX1; matched to the Sunbird's unit by meaning: Wikipedia's Sunbird article names the 3 speed Turbo-Hydramatic 125C in its infobox but prints no code; each page prints its model year (1986, 1987) and the 2.0 L power-team line reads "Avail (MD9)"; other years are left out because no listed kit page heads the code on a single-condition line; shared J-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Cavalier kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1986 Chevrolet Cavalier, p.4 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1987 Chevrolet Cavalier, p.4 | single-source |
| MX1 | Automatic transmission, 3 speed (merchandising code for the THM 125C) | 1984, 1986–1987 | matched to the unit by meaning: Wikipedia's Sunbird article names the 3 speed Turbo-Hydramatic 125C automatic in its infobox, but prints no code; the 1986 page prints MXI (letter I); 1985 is left out because the kit's option line is cut off after MX, and 1982–1983 because the brief lists no kit page of those years; shared J-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Cavalier kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1984 Chevrolet Cavalier, p.11 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1986 Chevrolet Cavalier, p.37 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1987 Chevrolet Cavalier, p.37 | single-source |
