Oldsmobile Toronado — E-body (fourth generation) (1986–1992)
Wikipedia gives the fourth-generation Toronado as model years 1986 to 1992, assembled at Detroit/Hamtramck, with a transversely mounted Buick 3.8L V6 as its only engine and the Troféo as a sportier model added in mid-1987. The NICB manuals print the car lines Toronado Custom and Toronado Brougham in the 1986 to 1989 tables (the 1988 and 1989 tables also print Troféo) and Toronado Troféo and Toronado Brougham in the 1990 to 1992 tables. No GM order guide, data book, Heritage kit or RPO list for this Toronado is in the archive, and the brief names no Chevrolet twin kit, so only four codes are listed: three engine codes and the FE3 suspension. Every row is single-source. No source read ties a transmission, axle, package, paint or trim code to this Toronado with a year.
Codes
Engines
| Code | Description | Years | Models/Notes | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LG3 | Engine, 3.8L V6, sequential fuel injection | 1987 | shared E-body code; cited from the Buick Riviera: gnttype.org's 1987 Buick VIN table prints LG3 (VIN code 3, 3.8L V6 SFI) for the Riviera Luxury, and Wikipedia's Buick V6 article names the Riviera's 1987 engine LG3; for the Toronado that article lists it only in a block shared by two engine codes, headed by LG2 and LG3, so no code is claimed for 1986; no Oldsmobile-specific source prints the code; a Wikipedia slash form is not a per-year reading | single-source |
| LN3 | Engine, 3.8L V6, Buick 3800 | 1988–1990 | Wikipedia's Toronado article says the LN3 V6 arrived for 1988 and its Buick V6 article lists the Toronado and the Troféo under LN3 for 1988–1990 (one source); matched to the first year by the Toronado article and to the span by the engine article; description follows the Toronado article; the merged Buick Riviera doc reads this code with different fuel-system wording (Buick Riviera reads it as multiport fuel injection) | single-source |
| L27 | Engine, 3.8L V6, Buick 3800 | 1991–1992 | Wikipedia's Buick V6 article lists the Toronado and the Troféo under L27 for 1991–1992; the Toronado article says 1991 models had more horsepower but names no code; matched to the car by the engine article's list; description follows the Toronado article; the merged Buick Riviera doc reads this code with different fuel-system wording (Buick Riviera reads it as sequential fuel injection) | single-source |
Equipment
| Code | Description | Years | Models/Notes | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FE3 | Suspension, stiffer, retuned shocks and struts | 1987–1988, 1992 | Wikipedia's Toronado article calls FE3 the corporate package of the mid-1987 Troféo, says the 1988 Toronado and Troféo included the FE3 suspension, and says the 1992 cars made the formerly optional FE3 standard; no year between is dated for it, so 1989–1991 is not claimed | single-source |
