Oldsmobile Toronado — E-body, front-drive (third generation) (1983–1985)

The 1983–1985 Toronado were the last model years of the third-generation front-drive E-body (this doc covers only 1983–1985). The 1983 and 1985 NICB manuals list a Toronado Custom and Brougham two-door coupe (body 57) in every model year they cover, and the 1985 manual adds a two-door convertible (body 67) in 1985 only. Wikipedia names a Buick 252 cu in V6 (through 1984), the Oldsmobile 307 V8 (standard in 1985) and the Oldsmobile 350 diesel V8 for the generation, with a 3 speed TH325 and a 4 speed TH325-4L automatic (the 4 speed through 1985). No GM order guide, data book, Heritage kit or RPO list for the Toronado is in the archive, and no Chevrolet kit shares the E-body platform, so only engine codes are listed: Wikipedia's engine articles name and date them, and gnttype.org's Buick VIN table prints each code for the Buick Riviera, a same-platform sibling (owner ruling, 2026-11-05). Transmissions, axles, options, packages, paint and trim are a gap in the sources, not a finding that they were not offered.

Codes

Engines

Code Description Years Models/Notes Confidence
LC4 Engine, 4.1L V6, 252 cu in, 4 barrel 1983–1984 the Buick 252 V6 (VIN code 4); Wikipedia's Buick V6 engine article prints LC4 and lists the Oldsmobile Toronado through 1984, matching its Toronado article (252 V6 through 1984); shared E-body code, cited from the Buick Riviera: gnttype.org's 1984 Buick VIN table prints LC4 for the Riviera Luxury, sibling corroboration of the code, T3, which does not lift the row; its 1983 table repeats the 1984 one; 1985 is left out because the 1985 NICB Oldsmobile engine table prints VIN code 4 in its 1984 column but not in its 1985 column and Wikipedia gives the engine through 1984 single-source
LV2 Engine, 5.0L V8, 4 barrel, 307 cu in 1983–1985 the Oldsmobile 307 V8 (VIN code Y), standard in 1985 per Wikipedia's Toronado article; Wikipedia's Oldsmobile V8 engine article prints LV2 and lists the Toronado through 1985; shared E-body code, cited from the Buick Riviera: gnttype.org's 1984 Buick VIN table prints LV2 for the Riviera convertible, sibling corroboration of the code, T3, which does not lift the row; its 1983 table repeats the 1984 one and its 1985 Riviera block repeats a later model year's table (a different engine), so neither adds a year single-source
LF9 Engine, diesel, 5.7L V8 1983–1985 the Oldsmobile 350 cu in diesel (VIN code N); Wikipedia's Oldsmobile Diesel engine article prints LF9 and lists the Toronado through 1985, and its Toronado article names the diesel V8 for the generation; shared E-body code, cited from the Buick Riviera: gnttype.org's 1984 Buick VIN table prints LF9 for the Riviera Luxury, sibling corroboration of the code, T3, which does not lift the row; its 1983 table repeats the 1984 one; the 1983 and 1985 NICB manuals print VIN code N in the Oldsmobile engine table without an RPO code single-source

Factory documents (T1)

No Oldsmobile factory document for the 1983–1985 Toronado is in docs/factory-docs/ or docs/heritage-ocr/, and no Chevrolet kit is cited: the brief lists none for the E-body.
