Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight — C-body, front-drive (eleventh generation) (1985–1990)
The eleventh-generation Ninety-Eight was Oldsmobile's front-drive C-body car for the 1985–1990 model years, a four-door sedan and a two-door coupe in Regency and Regency Brougham trim, the coupe dropped after 1987; Wikipedia adds the Touring Sedan (the W12 option package) from late in 1987. The NICB VIN manuals print the series "98 Regency", "98 Regency Brougham" and, for 1988–1990, "98 Touring" (spelled "98 Touring Sedan" in 1990). No GM order guide, data book, Heritage kit or service RPO list for this Ninety-Eight is in the archive, and the brief names no Chevrolet twin kit, so only a few codes are listed: four engine codes that Wikipedia's Buick V6 and Oldsmobile diesel articles tie to the car with years, and the Touring Sedan's W12 package and FE3 suspension from Wikipedia's Ninety-Eight article. The THM 440-T4 transmission and every other option, paint and trim code have no source that ties a code to this car with a year, so none is listed.
Codes
Engines
| Code | Description | Years | Models/Notes | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LK9 | Engine, 3.0L V6, 181 cu in, 2 barrel | 1985 | the standard engine, 110 hp; Wikipedia's Buick V6 article lists the 1985 Ninety-Eight among the LK9's applications, and its Ninety-Eight article gives the 3.0L V6 for 1985 and drops it for 1986; the 1985 NICB Oldsmobile engine table prints a 3.0L V6 2 BBL with VIN letter E but names no car line and no RPO code; shared C-body code, the Buick Electra also lists it for 1985 | single-source |
| LG3 | Engine, 3.8L V6, 231 cu in, fuel injection | 1985, 1987 | VIN code 3; optional in 1985, multiport injection, 125 hp, sequential from 1986, 150 hp in 1987 (Wikipedia's Ninety-Eight article, which gives 140 hp for 1986); Wikipedia's Buick V6 article lists the 1985–1987 Ninety-Eight among the 3.8 FWD engine's applications under a combined LG2/LG3 heading, which names neither code, and gives 125 hp to the pre-1986 engine and VIN code 3 (the LG3) to the 150 hp engine; 1986 is left out because the car's 140 hp matches the article's LG2 line while the sibling gnttype.org Buick Electra block prints LG3 for 1986, a same-year conflict between codes left unsettled; shared C-body code: gnttype.org's 1986 and 1987 Buick VIN tables print LG3 for the Electra (cited from the Buick Electra; its 1985 Electra block is a copy of its 1986 block and is not used), but no source dates the code on an Oldsmobile besides Wikipedia, so the row stays single-source; 1988 is left out because Wikipedia's Buick V6 article ends the Ninety-Eight's list at 1987 | single-source |
| LN3 | Engine, 3800 3.8L V6, multiport fuel injection | 1990 | VIN code C; 165 hp in 1990; Wikipedia's Ninety-Eight article names the LN3 for 1990 only and gives the 3.8 SFI 150 hp for 1987–1989, while its Buick V6 article lists the 1988–1990 Ninety-Eight under LN3, so 1988–1989 is left out as a conflict between the two articles; both are Wikipedia, so the row is single-source; shared C-body code, the Buick Electra is listed for the same years | single-source |
| LS2 | Engine, diesel, 4.3L V6, 263 cu in | 1985 | optional, 85 hp; Wikipedia's Oldsmobile diesel article lists the front-drive LS2 for the 1985 Ninety-Eight (and the Buick Electra and two Cadillacs) and its Ninety-Eight article drops the diesel for 1986; the 1985 NICB Oldsmobile engine table prints 4.3L V6 diesel letters but names no car line and no RPO code | single-source |
Packages & Trims
| Code | Description | Years | Models/Notes | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| W12 | Package, Touring Sedan | 1988–1990 | four-door sedan with floor shifter; Wikipedia's Ninety-Eight article names the Touring Sedan's "W12 option package" and gives its production for 1987 through 1990; the NICB manuals print "98 Touring" for 1988–1989 and "98 Touring Sedan" for 1990 (symbol CV), so 1987 is not claimed | single-source |
Equipment
| Code | Description | Years | Models/Notes | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FE3 | Suspension, sport, level 3 | 1988–1990 | only in: Touring Sedan; larger front stabilizer bar, added rear stabilizer bar, firmer bushings and stiffer springs; Wikipedia's Ninety-Eight article says the Touring Sedan was equipped with the FE3 suspension package; years follow the W12 row (NICB 1988–1990) | single-source |

Factory documents (T1)
No Oldsmobile factory document for the 1985–1990 Ninety-Eight is in docs/factory-docs/ or docs/heritage-ocr/, and the brief lists no Chevrolet twin kit, so no row carries an [FD] or [HK] citation.
