Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme — W-body (fifth generation) (1988–1997)
The fifth-generation Cutlass Supreme was Oldsmobile's front-drive W-body car for the 1988–1997 model years, a coupe from 1988 and a sedan from 1990 (Wikipedia); it replaced the rear-drive G-body Cutlass Supreme, which stayed in production in 1988 as the Cutlass Supreme Classic (Wikipedia, the W-Body Page). NICB's VIN manuals list the Cutlass Supreme, International Series, Brougham and Convertible in the 1992, 1994 and 1995 manuals, and the International Series, Convertible, S and SL in 1997. No Oldsmobile order guide, data book, Heritage kit or RPO list for this car is in the archive, so only powertrain codes are listed: Wikipedia's engine table names and dates the 2.8L (LB6), the 3.1L (LH0, then L82), the 3.4L DOHC (LQ1) and the Quad 4 (LD2, LG0), and the W-Body Page (w-body.com) prints three transaxle codes for the car. The Heritage kits of the Chevrolet Lumina and Monte Carlo, the W-body twins, are cited only for LH0, L82 and LQ1, shared engine codes whose Cutlass Supreme years Wikipedia gives; the kits never name the Oldsmobile, so they date a shared code only. No source read ties an option, package, paint or trim code to this car with a year, so none is listed; that does not mean none was offered.
Codes
Engines
| Code | Description | Years | Models/Notes | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LB6 | Engine, 2.8L (173 cu in) V6, multiport fuel injection | 1988–1989 | 130 hp; Wikipedia's Cutlass Supreme engine table prints LB6 for 1988–1989, and its 60° V6 article lists the car under LB6 for 1988–1989 (not independent); the W-Body Page dates the 2.8L 1988–1989 but prints no engine code; no listed Lumina or Monte Carlo kit page prints it | single-source |
| LH0 | Engine, 3.1L (191 cu in) V6, multiport fuel injection | 1989–1993 | 140 hp; Wikipedia's Cutlass Supreme engine table prints LH0 for 1989–1993 and its 60° V6 article lists the car under LH0 for 1989–1993 (not independent); the W-Body Page dates the 3.1L Gen II V6 1989–1993 without a code; 1989–1990 rest on Wikipedia, as the listed 1990 kit page carries only an issue date in the model-year field; the kits print LHO (letter O); shared W-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Lumina kit (1991–1993) ⛭ GM Heritage — 1991 Chevrolet Lumina, p.18 · 1992 Chevrolet Lumina, p.6 · 1993 Chevrolet Lumina, p.18 | single-source |
| LD2 | Engine, 2.3L I4, DOHC (Quad 4) | 1990–1991 | 160 hp; Wikipedia's Cutlass Supreme engine table prints LD2 for 1990–1991; the W-Body Page dates the Quad 4 1990–1991 without a code; the merged calais-n-body doc words LD2 "2.3 L L4, DOHC, fuel injection (Quad 4)" for that car, while Wikipedia's Cutlass Supreme table calls this engine I4; no listed kit page prints it | single-source |
| LG0 | Engine, 2.3L I4, DOHC, high output (Quad 4) | 1990 | 180 hp; Wikipedia's Cutlass Supreme engine table prints LG0 for 1990 alone, and its text pairs the high output Quad 4 with the Getrag 5 speed manual in 1990; no listed kit page prints it | single-source |
| LQ1 | Engine, 3.4L V6, DOHC, multiport fuel injection | 1991–1996 | Wikipedia's Cutlass Supreme engine table prints LQ1 for 1991–1995 (210 hp) and 1996 (215 hp), and its text puts the end of the 3.4L option in 1996; its 60° V6 article lists the car under LQ1 for 1991–1996 (not independent); the 1994 power teams page (p.5) prints LQT, so 1994 is cited from the weight page; the 1995 Monte Carlo order guide words the engine 3.4 liter SFI V6, while the weight pages write MFI; shared W-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Lumina kit (1991–1994, 1996) and the Chevrolet Monte Carlo kit (1995) ⛭ GM Heritage — 1991 Chevrolet Lumina, p.14 · 1992 Chevrolet Lumina, p.6 · 1993 Chevrolet Lumina, p.10 · 1994 Chevrolet Lumina, p.42 · 1995 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, p.15 · 1996 Chevrolet Lumina, p.104 | single-source |
| L82 | Engine, 3.1L V6, sequential fuel injection | 1994–1997 | 160 hp; Wikipedia's Cutlass Supreme engine table prints L82 for 1994–1997; its 60° V6 article lists the car under L82 for 1993–1997, a year earlier (see the report gaps), so 1993 is left out; 1994 rests on Wikipedia, as no listed 1994 kit page prints it; the 1995–1997 order guides word it 3.1 liter SFI V6 (the 1997 page lists it on the power teams line), and the merged lumina-gen2 doc reads L82 from GM's later lists as multiport fuel injection, high output; shared W-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Lumina kit (1995–1997) ⛭ GM Heritage — 1995 Chevrolet Lumina, p.10 · 1996 Chevrolet Lumina, p.18 · 1997 Chevrolet Lumina, p.12 | single-source |
Transmissions
| Code | Description | Years | Models/Notes | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ME9 | Automatic transaxle, 4 speed (THM 440-T4) | 1988–1989 | the W-Body Page's Cutlass Supreme transaxle table gives ME9 for the 440T4 with the 2.8L and 3.1L engines, 1988–1989 (an enthusiast page that the tier map never verified, so it is the only code source); the same page words the 1990–1991 4T60 as the same unit with updated numbering and prints no code for it; no listed Lumina kit page of a dated year prints ME9 | single-source |
| MG2 | Manual transaxle, 5 speed | 1988–1989 | the W-Body Page's table gives MG2 for the Getrag HM-282 with the 2.8L, 1988–1989 (an enthusiast page that the tier map never verified); Wikipedia names a Muncie 5 speed manual with the 2.8L in 1988 and 1989 (the W-Body Page names the unit Getrag), without a code | single-source |
| M27 | Transaxle, 5 speed manual, Getrag | 1991–1992 | the Getrag HM-284 with the LQ1; the W-Body Page's table gives M27 for 1991–1992 (an enthusiast page that the tier map never verified); Wikipedia's Cutlass Supreme text puts the end of the manual option in 1992 and pairs the 5 speed with the 3.4L in 1991 and 1992; its 60° V6 article gives the Getrag 284 as optional 1991–1993, so 1993 is left out (see the report gaps); the listed Lumina kit pages of 1991 and 1992 carry no readable model year, so no kit is cited; same description as grand-prix-gen6 | single-source |
