Oldsmobile Calais — N-body (1985–1991)

The Calais was Oldsmobile's front-drive N-body compact for the 1985–1991 model years, renamed Cutlass Calais for 1988 (Wikipedia). The NICB VIN manuals list the Calais and Calais Supreme two-door notchback from 1985, and the Cutlass Calais, Calais S, Calais Supreme, SL and International Series in the late years. No GM order guide, data book, Heritage kit or service RPO list for the Calais is in the archive, the archive holds no Chevrolet kit for this platform, and the NICB manuals print no RPO codes, so only engine codes and the FE3 suspension are listed: Wikipedia's Calais article and the engine articles it links name and date the engines, and gnttype.org's Buick VIN tables corroborate the shared 3.0L V6 code on the Somerset. No other source read ties a transmission, axle, option, package, paint or trim code to the Calais with a year, so none is listed.

Codes

Engines

Code Description Years Models/Notes Confidence
LN7 Engine, 3.0L V6, 181 cu in, multiport fuel injection (VIN L) 1985–1988 shared N-body code; cited from the Buick Somerset; optional Buick V6, 125 hp, with the automatic only (Wikipedia's Calais article); Wikipedia's Buick V6 engine article prints LN7 and VIN code L and lists the Calais for 1985–1988; gnttype.org's 1986 and 1987 Buick VIN tables print LN7 on the Somerset rows, sibling corroboration of the code (T3; it names the code on a Somerset, not a Calais, so it does not lift the row); its 1985 table repeats the 1986 table single-source
LD2 Engine, 2.3L L4, DOHC, fuel injection (Quad 4) 1988–1991 Oldsmobile-built, 150 hp in 1988–1989 and 160 hp from 1990; Wikipedia's Quad 4 engine article lists the Cutlass Calais under LD2 for 1988–1991 and says the engine reached production on the 1988 Calais; the Calais article says the Quad 4 was available on all models from 1988 and lists it from 1987 (1987 is left out because the Quad 4 article dates the engine's introduction to the 1988 model year); not independent of each other; the description says fuel injection without the multiport wording because the Quad 4 article gives no more detail (the merged Pontiac Grand Am doc reads its Quad 4 rows as multiport fuel injection) single-source
LG0 Engine, 2.3L L4, DOHC, high output, fuel injection (Quad 4) 1990–1991 180 hp, 5 speed manual only; Quad 442 and International Series; Wikipedia's Quad 4 article lists the International Series for 1989–1991 and the Quad 442 for 1990–1991, while the Calais article's engine list gives the 180 hp engine for 1990–1991 only, so 1989 is left out; not independent of each other single-source
W41 Engine, 2.3L L4, DOHC, high output, W41 (Quad 4) 1991 190 hp, Quad 442, 5 speed manual only with a 3.94 final drive; the Calais article's engine list dates the W41 car to 1991 and the Quad 4 article lists the Calais 442 for 1990–1991, so only 1991 is claimed; not independent of each other single-source
LG7 Engine, 3.3L V6, 204 cu in 1989–1991 shared N-body code; 160 hp, replaced the 3.0L V6; Wikipedia's Buick V6 engine article names the 3300 as LG7 and lists the Calais for 1989–1991, and the Calais article's engine list gives the 3300 for the same years (not independent); gnttype.org's Buick tables do not print it single-source

Equipment

Code Description Years Models/Notes Confidence
FE3 Suspension, sport tuned 1986 the GT and ES trims; Wikipedia's Calais article says the 1986 GT and ES had the FE3 sport tuned suspension and that the International Series came with the FE3 sport suspension as standard (that sentence is undated, so no later year is claimed); matched to the Calais by the article's text single-source

No Oldsmobile factory document for the 1985–1991 Calais is in docs/factory-docs/ or docs/heritage-ocr/, and no Chevrolet twin-kit page was listed for this doc, so no row carries an [FD] or [HK] citation.
