Cadillac Cimarron — J-body (1982–1988)

The Cimarron was Cadillac's four-door compact for the 1982–1988 model years, one generation on the GM J platform shared with the Chevrolet Cavalier, Buick Skyhawk, Oldsmobile Firenza and Pontiac J2000/Sunbird (Wikipedia). The NICB VIN manuals list the Cimarron sedan 4 door in each year but print no trim badge. No GM order guide, data book, Heritage kit or service RPO list for the Cimarron is in the archive, so only three engine codes are listed: Wikipedia's Cimarron article and its 122 and 60-degree V6 engine articles name and date them, and the Heritage kits of the Chevrolet Cavalier, the J-body twin, date the V6 code (LB6) as a shared code. No source read ties a transmission, option, package, paint or trim code to the Cimarron with a year, so none is listed.

Codes

Engines

Code Description Years Models/Notes Confidence
L46 1.8 L (112 cu in) L4, OHV, carburetor 1982 the launch engine, replaced by the LQ5; Wikipedia's Cimarron article (infobox and text) and its 122 engine article, which gives the Cimarron 1982 only and names a 2-barrel carburetor single-source
LQ5 2.0 L (121 cu in) L4, OHV, throttle-body fuel injection 1983–1986 the OHV engine enlarged to 2 liters for 1983; Wikipedia's Cimarron article (infobox and text, which dates the 2.0 L from 1983) and its 122 engine article give it to the Cimarron 1983–1986 (the 122 article also says LQ5 was introduced midway through 1982, but its applications list gives the Cimarron L46 for 1982 only and LQ5 for 1983–1986, and the row follows the applications list); the article names no four-cylinder after 1986, so 1987–1988 are left out single-source
LB6 2.8 L (173 cu in) V6, multiport fuel injection 1985–1988 an option from 1985 and the standard engine for 1988, not available in the Cavalier or Firenza sedans (Wikipedia); Wikipedia's Cimarron article (infobox 1985–1988) and its 60-degree V6 article (Cimarron 1985–1986 and 1987–1988 in two lists) give the years; shared J-body code, dated for the Chevrolet Cavalier by its kit's optional equipment weight pages in each year, which never name the Cimarron ⛭ GM Heritage — 1985 Chevrolet Cavalier, p.35 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1986 Chevrolet Cavalier, p.37 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1987 Chevrolet Cavalier, p.37 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1988 Chevrolet Cavalier, p.42 single-source
