Buick Riviera — E-body (seventh generation) (1986–1993)

The 1986–1993 Riviera was a two-door coupe (Wikipedia). The NICB manuals list it as the Riviera Luxury (car line EZ) in every year from 1986 to 1993 and as the Riviera T-Type (EY) in 1986 only, and name Hamtramck as its assembly plant (1987 NICB manual). Wikipedia gives the 3.8L V6 as the only engine of the generation. No GM order guide, data book, Heritage kit or RPO list for this Riviera is in the archive, so only the four engine codes are listed: Wikipedia names and dates them, and gnttype.org's 1987 Buick VIN table prints LG3 for the Riviera. No source read ties a transmission, axle, option, package, paint or trim code to this Riviera with a year, so none is listed.

Codes

Engines

Code Description Years Models/Notes Confidence
LG2 Engine, 3.8L V6, sequential fuel injection 1986 Wikipedia's Riviera article names LG2 as the 1986 engine, and its Buick V6 article lists the 1986 Riviera under LG2 (VIN code B, flat lifters); the two articles are one source; disputed: Wikipedia reads LG2 and gnttype.org reads LG3 for the 1986 Riviera; no Riviera source of the archive prints the code except Wikipedia; gnttype.org's 1986 Buick VIN table prints LG3, not LG2, for the Riviera Luxury, a same-year conflict between the two sources, left unsettled, so the 1986 year of LG3 is not claimed; decoderpo.com's GM-wide dictionary reads LG2 as the 3.8L V6 sequential fuel injection engine (VIN 3.8B) but names no vehicle disputed
LG3 Engine, 3.8L V6, sequential fuel injection 1987 Riviera Luxury; the Wikipedia Riviera article names LG3 (roller lifters) as the 1987 engine, and gnttype.org's 1987 Buick VIN table prints LG3 (VIN code 3) for the Riviera Luxury, built at Hamtramck; 1986 is left out because gnttype.org's 1986 table also prints LG3 for the Riviera while Wikipedia gives LG2 for that year; decoderpo.com's dictionary prints LG3 only as an unrelated 4.3L (262 cu in) V6 engine for direct sales, so it is no check on this meaning confirmed
LN3 Engine, 3.8L V6, multiport fuel injection 1988–1990 Wikipedia's Riviera article says the LN3 was used from 1988 until 1990 and its Buick V6 article lists the 1988–1990 Riviera under LN3 (VIN code C); the two articles are one source; matched to the car by meaning; decoderpo.com's GM-wide dictionary reads LN3 as the 3.8L V6 multiport fuel injection engine but names no vehicle single-source
L27 Engine, 3.8L V6, sequential fuel injection 1991–1993 Wikipedia's Riviera article says the last three model years used the L27, and its Buick V6 article lists the 1991–1993 Riviera under L27; the two articles are one source; matched to the car by meaning; decoderpo.com's GM-wide dictionary reads L27 as the 3.8L V6 sequential fuel injection engine but names no vehicle single-source
