Buick Regal — W-body (third generation) (1988–1996)
The third-generation Regal was the first front-drive Regal and the first car on GM's W-body, built at Oshawa, Ontario: a coupe from 1988 and a sedan from the 1991 model year, in Custom and Limited trim, with the Gran Sport added for 1989 (Wikipedia). The NICB VIN manuals list the Regal Custom, Regal Limited and Regal Gran Sport. No Buick order guide, data book, Heritage kit or RPO list for this generation is in the archive, so only powertrain codes are listed: Wikipedia's Regal and engine articles name and date the 2.8L (LB6), 3.1L (LH0, then L82) and 3800 (L27, then L36) V6s, and the Heritage kits of the Chevrolet Lumina, the W-body twin, are cited only for LH0, L82 and the transmission codes M13 and MX0, which the kits never tie to the Regal; they only date a code the two cars share. No kit covers 1988–1989; the listed 1994 pages print none of these codes, and the 1990 page that prints them carries only an issue date in the model-year field, so 1990 rests on Wikipedia. No source read ties an option, package, paint or trim code to this Regal with a year, so none is listed.
Codes
Engines
| Code | Description | Years | Models/Notes | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LB6 | Engine, 2.8L (173 cu in) V6, multiport fuel injection | 1988–1989 | the only engine for 1988; 125 hp; Wikipedia's Regal engine list and its 60° V6 article both give LB6 to the Regal for 1988–1989 (one source); no listed kit page covers these years | single-source |
| LH0 | Engine, 3.1L (191 cu in) V6, multiport fuel injection | 1990–1993 | Wikipedia's Regal engine list and its 60° V6 article give LH0 to the Regal and date every year; 1990 from those Wikipedia articles (the listed 1990 kit page that prints LHO, p.41, carries only an issue date in the model-year field, so it is not cited; the 1991 p.73 and 1992 p.55 weight pages are likewise not cited); 1992 also from the 1992 power teams page (p.6), which prints model year 1992 and LHO (letter O) twice on its engine code line; 1989 is left out because those articles start it in 1989 while the 1989 entry of engine-build.com's Regal table gives only the LB6 (see the report gaps); the kits print LHO (letter O); shared W-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Lumina kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1991 Chevrolet Lumina, p.18 · 1992 Chevrolet Lumina, p.6 · 1993 Chevrolet Lumina, p.18 | confirmed |
| L27 | Engine, 3800 3.8L V6, multiport fuel injection | 1990–1995 | the 3800 Series I, optional from mid-1990; 170 hp; Wikipedia's Regal engine list and its Buick V6 article give L27 to the Regal for 1990–1995 (Wikipedia calls the induction tuned port injection); the Lumina never offered it, so no kit page applies | single-source |
| L82 | Engine, 3.1L V6, sequential fuel injection | 1994–1996 | 160 hp; Wikipedia's Regal engine list and its 60° V6 article give L82 to the Regal and date every year; 1994 from those Wikipedia articles, as the 1994 kit's listed pages do not print it; the merged lumina-gen2 and century-w-body docs read L82 from GM's 1998–1999 lists as multiport fuel injection, high output, while the 1995–1996 order guides cited here print SFI; shared W-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Lumina kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1995 Chevrolet Lumina, p.10 · 1996 Chevrolet Lumina, p.18 | confirmed |
| L36 | Engine, 3800 Series II 3.8L V6 | 1996 | 205 hp; Wikipedia's Regal engine list gives L36 for 1996, and its Buick V6 article gives the Regal the L36 from 1996; the merged regal-w-body-1997 doc reads L36 from GM's 1998–2004 lists as a 3.8 liter multiport fuel injection, high output V6 | single-source |
Transmissions
| Code | Description | Years | Models/Notes | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M13 | Transmission, automatic, 4 speed, 4T60-E, electronic | 1993, 1995–1996 | matched to the unit by meaning: Wikipedia gives the Regal the electronically controlled 4T60-E for 1993–1996 but prints no code; 1994 is left out because no listed 1994 kit page prints the code; the kit pages word it a four speed automatic, HMD; the description follows the merged regal-w-body-1997, century-w-body and lumina-gen2 docs, while the merged lumina-gen1 doc reads M13 as Transaxle, 4 speed automatic, HMD; shared W-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Lumina kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1993 Chevrolet Lumina, p.73 · 1995 Chevrolet Lumina, p.53 · 1996 Chevrolet Lumina, p.104 | single-source |
| MX0 | Merchandised transmission, automatic, provisions, overdrive | 1991, 1993, 1995–1996 | matched to the unit by meaning: Wikipedia gives every Regal of this generation a 4 speed automatic but prints no code; the order guides print MXO (letter O) and word it a 4 speed automatic (electronic in 1995–1996); 1990, 1992 and 1994 are left out because no listed kit page of those years prints the code; the description follows the merged regal-w-body-1997, century-w-body and lumina-gen2 docs, while the merged lumina-gen1 doc reads MX0 as Transmission, 4 speed automatic, electronic; shared W-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Lumina kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1991 Chevrolet Lumina, p.18 · 1993 Chevrolet Lumina, p.18 · 1995 Chevrolet Lumina, p.10 · 1996 Chevrolet Lumina, p.18 | single-source |
