Buick Regal — G-body, rear-drive (1983–1987)

The rear-drive G-body Regal of these years was a coupe throughout, with a sedan in 1983–1984 and a wagon in 1983 (Wikipedia's production table); the NICB manuals list the Regal, Regal Sport and Regal Limited lines and, from 1984, the Regal T-Type, and gnttype.org gives the 1985–1987 models as the J47 coupe, M47 Limited coupe and K47 T-Type coupe. Engines run from the 3.8L V6 (LD5) throughout, the 4.1L V6 (LC4) and 4.3L V6 diesel (LT6) in 1983–1984 and the 5.7L V8 diesel (LF9) to 1985, to the turbocharged 3.8L V6 (LM9, then the intercooled LC2 from 1986) and the 5.0L V8 (LV2) in 1986–1987. No GM order guide, data book or Heritage kit for the Regal is in the archive: the codes come from gnttype.org (a 1987 option and price sheet given as an example by John Z. Gyekenyesi, its 1983–1987 VIN engine tables, its Grand National package lists and its production page), Wikipedia, one Before Black caption, and the Chevrolet Monte Carlo kits for the codes the two G-body coupes share; buickturboregal.com's 1984–1987 code list, which gives no years, only corroborates. Only the 1987 sheet dates the options, so nearly every equipment row is 1987 alone: the options of 1983–1986 are a gap in the sources, not a finding that they were not offered.

Codes

Engines

Code Description Years Models/Notes Confidence
LD5 Engine, 3.8L V6, 231 cu in, 2 barrel 1983–1987 the base engine; not with WE2 (1987); every year from gnttype.org's VIN engine tables, 1987 also from its option sheet; shared G-body powertrain code, cited from the Monte Carlo kit (1983–1984) ⛭ GM Heritage — 1983 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, p.30 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1984 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, p.36 confirmed
LC4 Engine, 4.1L V6, 252 cu in, 4 barrel 1983–1984 gnttype.org's 1983 and 1984 VIN engine tables; Wikipedia gives the 4.1L to the Regal through 1984 confirmed
LT6 Engine, diesel, 4.3L V6 1983–1984 gnttype.org's 1983 and 1984 VIN engine tables; Wikipedia gives the 4.3L diesel V6 to the Regal through 1984; shared G-body powertrain code, cited from the Monte Carlo kit (1983) ⛭ GM Heritage — 1983 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, p.30 confirmed
LF9 Engine, diesel, 5.7L V8 1983–1985 Wikipedia gives the 5.7L diesel V8 to the Regal through 1985, and buickturboregal.com lists LF9 among the Regal's codes; gnttype.org's VIN tables do not list it under the Regal; shared G-body powertrain code, cited from the Monte Carlo kit (1983–1984) ⛭ GM Heritage — 1983 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, p.30 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1984 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, p.36 confirmed
LM9 Engine, 3.8L V6, turbocharged, sequential fuel injection 1984–1985 T-Type and Grand National; gnttype.org's 1984 and 1985 VIN tables (engine VIN code 9); its 1983 table also prints LM9, as a carbureted turbo, but its own 1983 example gives the 4-barrel turbo engine as VIN code 3 with no RPO code, so 1983 is not claimed confirmed
LC2 Engine, 3.8L V6, turbocharged, intercooled, sequential fuel injection 1986–1987 gnttype.org's 1986 and 1987 VIN tables (engine VIN code 7) and its 1987 option sheet: requires Y56 and C60, and included with WE2; Wikipedia dates the intercooler and the LC2 code from 1986 confirmed
LV2 Engine, 5.0L V8, 307 cu in, 4 barrel 1986–1987 gnttype.org's 1986 and 1987 VIN tables and its 1987 option sheet (not with WE2; requires C60 with YF5); Wikipedia gives the Regal the Oldsmobile 307 V8 for 1986–1987; 1985 is left out: gnttype.org's 1985 VIN table lists it under the Regal, but Wikipedia starts it in 1986 confirmed

MX0 Transmission, 4 speed automatic, overdrive 1987 not with LD5; included with WE2, whose lists call it the 200-4R; gnttype.org's 1987 option sheet; 1986 is left out because gnttype.org prints it that year only inside the WE2 package; the kit's 1987 price page prints MXO; shared G-body code, cited from the Monte Carlo kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, p.47 confirmed
