Buick LeSabre — B-body, rear-drive (fifth generation) (1983–1985)
The 1983–1985 LeSabre was the last of the rear-drive fifth generation, a B-body coupe and sedan in Custom and Limited models (Wikipedia), which the NICB manuals list as the LeSabre, LeSabre Custom and LeSabre Limited car lines, built at Flint and Fairfax (1983 NICB manual); the wagon of these years is covered by the Estate Wagon doc. Wikipedia gives the 231 cu in V6 as the standard engine, the 252 cu in V6 as an option for 1983 only, and the Oldsmobile 307 V8 and 350 diesel V8 as options in all three years. No GM order guide, data book, Heritage kit or RPO list for the LeSabre is in the archive, so only powertrain codes are listed: gnttype.org's per-year Buick VIN tables and Wikipedia's engine articles name and date the engine codes, and the Chevrolet Caprice kits, the B-body twin, are cited only for the shared codes LD5, LF9 and MX0. No source read ties an option, package, axle, paint or trim code to the LeSabre with a year, so none is listed.
Codes
Engines
| Code | Description | Years | Models/Notes | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LD5 | Engine, 3.8L V6, 231 cu in, 2 barrel | 1983–1985 | the standard engine of the coupe and sedan (VIN code A); Wikipedia's LeSabre article names the 231 V6 in each of these years but prints no code, so the code is matched to the car by meaning; gnttype.org's 1984 and 1985 Buick VIN tables print it for the LeSabre Custom and Limited; 1984 rests on those two non-kit sources (the 1984 kit's LD5 page has no readable model year, and its dated page names LD5 only beside LC3); shared B-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Caprice kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1983 Chevrolet Caprice, p.17 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1985 Chevrolet Caprice, p.40 | single-source |
| LC4 | Engine, 4.1L V6, 252 cu in, 4 barrel | 1983 | optional (VIN code 4); Wikipedia's LeSabre article names the 252 V6 as a 1983 option, dropped for 1984, and its Buick V6 article prints LC4 for the LeSabre; gnttype.org's 1983 Buick VIN table prints it for the LeSabre but repeats its 1984 table word for word, so it is not counted as a second source; 1984 and 1985 are left out: gnttype.org's 1984 and 1985 tables and the Buick V6 article's application line also give it, but the LeSabre article says it was dropped for 1984, and the 1985 NICB manual's Buick engine table prints VIN code 4 in its 1984 column but not in its 1985 column | single-source |
| LV2 | Engine, 5.0L V8, 4 barrel, 307 cu in | 1983–1985 | the Oldsmobile 307 V8 (VIN code Y), optional on the coupe and sedan; Wikipedia's Oldsmobile V8 article prints LV2 for the LeSabre through 1985 and its LeSabre article names the 307 in each of these years; gnttype.org's 1984 and 1985 Buick VIN tables print it for the LeSabre (its 1983 table repeats the 1984 table word for word, so 1983 rests on Wikipedia alone); the Caprice kits of these years show the Chevrolet 305 (LG4) instead, so no factory page prints the code | single-source |
| LF9 | Engine, diesel, 5.7L V8 | 1983–1985 | the Oldsmobile 350 cu in diesel (VIN code N), optional; Wikipedia's Oldsmobile Diesel article prints LF9 for the LeSabre through 1985 and its LeSabre article names the 350 diesel in each of these years; gnttype.org's 1984 and 1985 Buick VIN tables print it for the LeSabre; the 1984 kit citation is p.40's heavy-duty battery remark (with RPO-LF9 diesel); shared B-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Caprice kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1983 Chevrolet Caprice, p.13 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1984 Chevrolet Caprice, p.40 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1985 Chevrolet Caprice, p.18 | confirmed |
Transmissions
| Code | Description | Years | Models/Notes | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MX0 | Transmission, 4 speed automatic, overdrive | 1984–1985 | matched to the unit by meaning: Wikipedia's LeSabre infobox names the THM200-4R four-speed automatic for the generation but prints no code and no year; the 1984 page prints MXO; each page prints its own model year; 1983 is left out because the 1983 Caprice kit shows an overdrive automatic with no code; shared B-body code; cited from the Chevrolet Caprice kit ⛭ GM Heritage — 1984 Chevrolet Caprice, p.39 ⛭ GM Heritage — 1985 Chevrolet Caprice, p.41 | single-source |
