Chevrolet Corvette RPO Codes — 1960–1967 (C1 tail & C2)

Part 1 of 2 of the Corvette RPO reference (see corvette.md for the index and corvette-c3.md for 1968–1982). Through 1962 Chevrolet used numeric option codes; alphanumeric RPO codes (A01, L84, Z06 …) begin in 1963.

Notes format: original option price and production count are given as "$XXX.XX; N built" where sources supply them. Confidence per README: confirmed = 2+ independent sources, single-source, disputed.

Famous option — Z06 "Special Performance Equipment" ($1,818.45; 199 built): coupe-only race package requiring the L84 fuel-injected 327, M20 4-speed and G81 Positraction; included heavy-duty brakes and suspension. Early Z06 cars included the 36-gallon tank (and initially knock-off wheels) before the tank became separate RPO N03 — big-tank coupes are the famed "Tankers" (63 N03 tanks built in 1963).

Famous option — L78 396/425 ($292.70; 2,157 built): the first big-block Corvette, introduced mid-year (~March/April 1965); solid lifters, required K66 transistor ignition. 1965 was also the last year of the C1/C2 "fuelie": L84 fuel injection (771 built) would not return to a Corvette until Cross-Fire Injection in 1982.

Year 1966

Famous option — L72 427/425 ($312.85; 5,258 built): announced at 450hp, administratively re-rated to 425hp at the start of production (insurance/liability; no mechanical change) — early cars are documented as "427/450". The Corvette Black Book pages bound into the GM Heritage kit (pp.4, 6) show 5,258 built at $312.85 (the "5,528" figure does not appear) and say the 450→425 change was to the rating, not the output. The Black Book is a third-party book and no GM page in the kit settles either point, so the row is disputed again (G2-b, 2026-10-01).

Year 1967

Famous option — L88 ($947.90; 20 built): 427ci competition engine, deliberately underrated at 430hp (actual ~540–580hp); 12.5:1 compression, aluminum heads, 850cfm Holley; mandatory heater/defroster delete (C48) and other required options to discourage street use. Also note N03 36-gallon tank — only 2 built in 1967, its final year, and L89 aluminum heads (16 built), the rarest '67 engine add-on.

Factory kits (T1)

GM Heritage OCR kits (each bundles the Corvette Black Book option summary plus factory dealer price schedules / spec-book "Regular Production Options" pages). Used to upgrade rows to confirmed and to resolve disputes; <span class="doc-cite">⛭ GM Heritage — …</span> citations in the tables above give the page. G2-b (2026-10-01): the Corvette Black Book summary pages are a third-party book, not GM pages (S2). [HK] citations now point only at the kits' GM pages; prices and production counts taken from the Black Book are credited to it in the notes, and disputes the kit pass had settled on Black Book pages are open again unless a GM page settles them (row by row: docs/rpo/CLASSIC-HK-EDITS.tsv).
